A PUPPY'S TALE

I was out of town for Jasper’s first day with us, so I missed much of the first part of A Puppy’s Tale. I learned the story from my wife, Kelly. Every time she picked me up at the airport, or I dropped her off - this happened a lot - I obsessively made her tell me Jasper’s story. I wanted to know everything. What did the cargo area look like? Were the cargo guys nice to our new puppy? Did she see Jasper come off the plane? What did she think the first moment she saw him? Was he scared? Or,  just happy to be off the plane? Did he lick her the first time she picked him up? What did he smell like? What did he feel like? What happened when he came out of his crate the first time? What did he do when he was introduced to our grizzled old boxer Roxy? What did Roxy do?

I’d say, “Tell me Jasper’s story.” And she did… over and over and over again. Each time another layer of detail was added. Jasper’s first day became imprinted in my memory. I’d close my eyes and listen. It became a soothing bedtime story. One day I thought, this is a bedtime story. And so A Puppy’s Tale was born.

IT'S NOT FUN

This is an intimate, funny and often-heartbreaking look into the hidden world of professional golf. The players labor on tours, The Tight Lies, The Golden Bear, The Hooters, The Nationwide. These tours come and go. And then the real gatekeeper to the doors of the Big Tour, the ultra high pressure PGA Sectionals, and the brutal 6 rounds of Q-School. Most people, even avid golfers, have never heard of these tours. But the guys playing, mostly young, almost all high level college players, many All-Americans, are pros in every sense.  They play in obscure places; they carry their own bags. They play Mondays qualifiers, Pro-Ams and a PGA 4-round format. They have cuts. They play for money. There are no ropes, no marshals and except for the odd girlfriend or Mom and Dad no fans. No limos, just beat up cars with lots of miles on them. No posh hotels, just roadside motels, often shared with fellow players.

Andy ate with them, walked their courses, and slept in the same hotels. He’s has recorded the exhilarating highs and funnier moments along with the devastating disappointments. It there’s anyplace in the sports world where the cliché “Follow you dreams,” exists, it’s here. Every player wants, desperately, to find the PGA tour.  Some will. Most will not.
